Shark Fishing / Tagging Ocean City, MD

All the data collected will be provided to NOAA Fisheries Narragansett Laboratory for analysis.

Data from our shark tagging program provides valuable information on migration. The need for international cooperation is underscored by the fact that many shark specieshave wide ranging distributions, frequently traverse national boundaries, and are exploited by multinational fisheries. Shark tagging is also an important means to increase our biological understanding of sharks and to obtain information for rational resource management. The tagging of sharks (and other aquatic animals) provides information on stock identity, movements and migration (including rates and routes), abundance, age and growth (including verification/validation of age determination methods), mortality, and behavior.

Though there is no guarantee you'll catch a shark, past trips have reeled in sandbars, dusky, thresher, blacktip, hammerhead, and other shark species. This trip offers the thrill of deep-sea sport fishing, but with the good conscience of knowing that you're contributing to valuable science that will help conserve these apex hunters of the sea.

Must be 15 years old. The trip tuition includes tackle, bait, chum & sodas on the boat.

More than just an adventure, this educational shark tagging expedition takes you into a world that few can ever experience. The world of sharks!

OC Shark Encounter's exclusive shark tagging expeditions will provide a safe and exciting offshore voyage to learn the habits and biology of sharks and participate in the collection of important shark data.

A very important part of our shark adventure is education. You will be presented with fascinating facts about shark biology and behavior, about ocean life and conservationissues. Each guest will take part in the shark fishing and tagging process and can become an ambassador for conservation, an experience that will last well past the day of the expedition.

An estimated 60 percent of the world sharks have been killed and the numbers continue to rapidly decline. Through a personal encounter we hope to show the beauty and importance of sharks, and that sharks have much more to fear from us than we do from them. A healthy ocean needs sharks, and they need out understanding and protection.
